About Paul Watson

Over the last 10 years, I have helped hundreds (probably thousands) of people to add millions of pounds in value by helping them get planning permission for development on their land or property.

Over that time I realised that most people cannot see the potential to add value to their property through planning, or can sometimes they can see the potential, but have no idea where to start to add value to their land/property assets, and how to realise that value in their bank balance.

Most of the content online is dry and focused purely on the law and policy rather than get the outcome you want. The Town Planning system is a tool to add value to land-based assets, and coupled with knowledge of business models, we support you to extract that value.

That’s why I set up this website and newsletter. ThisProperty helps you to understand how to use planning in plain English, and provides practical tools and resources to give you the knowledge and confidence to add value to your property.

Why we can support you

I have been working in Town Planning for more than 10 years.

I have a Bachelors degree in Geography and a Master’s degree in Spatial Planning and Development.

I am also currently in the process of acquiring Chartered Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). Following that, I will acquire the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accreditation for Planning and Development as well.

I started my career as a Student Planning Policy Officer in Powys County Council working on the Development Plan-making process, researching the evidence base for the Development Plan and drafting planning policies as part of plan-making, as well as some of the more straightforward planning applications. This, before moving to Oxfordshire and working in a District Council planning department, recommending approval or refusal to various types of planning applications. As a Planning Officer, I made decisions on hundreds of planning cases.

Over that time I saw how much value was being created each time I approved an application.

So I decided to jump ship and work on the other side of the table as a planning consultant within the private sector and within 6 months I was promoted to Senior Planning Consultant, supporting applicants/owners/clients with various scales and types of development proposals.

Now I see the planning system differently and support people to add value to their land-based assets via planning permission.

I also work on my own developments. I have secured planning for a large agricultural shed. On a separate land parcel, I secured approval for 3 holiday cabins on my home farm, and I’m currently undertaking further work to support another application for a further 7 holiday cabins. Additionally, I’m now working to develop my detached house and garden, by extension and alteration to create a block of residential apartments containing at least 6x self-contained units, with more developments planned.

I am constantly on the look-out for opportunities to add significant asset value – whether for yield or immediate return, whether for myself, or in partnership, joint-ventures, or special purpose vehicles with others too.
